Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Naturopath qualified?

Yes. A professional naturopath will have a minimum of an Advanced Diploma in Naturopathy and will often have a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science. They should have professional indemnity insurance and should be registered with one of the industry bodies, such as ACNEM, Australian Traditional Medicine Society or Australian Natural Therapists Association.

Should I see a Naturopath or a GP?

The answer is both. Naturopaths are allied health professionals, meaning they work with or complement primary heath care. Your GP can order routine blood tests or prescribe pharmaceutical medication to manage symptoms or refer you to a specialist for more specific disease management. They are the first port of call and play a central role in screening for serious conditions or providing a diagnosis. Many people may have symptoms that do not fit a diagnosis, or they want additional help with managing their condition. Your naturopath is also trained in understanding disease, but is more likely to implement a holistic protocol involving foods, nutrition, functional testing or plant based remedies.

What if I have questions after my appointment?

It is best to email if you have a quick question, or if you have a more substantial question please ask this in your next consultation so you have dedicated time to discuss.

I already take supplements will I have to stop those?

Supplements are best when they are part of a clear plan for therapy. Ideally you will know why you are taking a particular product, how much to take/when, and for how long to take it. Many people are taking lots of expensive supplements and they aren’t entirely sure why or when to stop. If you aren’t sure about what you are taking then a consultation is the best opportunity to raise these questions and review your supplements.

What does a Naturopath Do?

Naturopaths who are degree qualified are trained to understand human biology, chemistry, pharmacology, nutrition, herbal medicine and health conditions. Some may specialise in a particular area like women’s hormones or sports medicine. There are a few key approaches a naturopath may take during a consultation: 1. Take a comprehensive view of your health: they will want to have a thorough grasp of your medical history, current medications, diet, lifestyle to best help you. 2. Test not guess: naturopaths can order both routine lab tests and functional lab tests to check your gut health, hormones, stress neutrotransmitters, food intolerances etc. 3. Patient education and collaberation: a naturopath is going to take time to explain why a particular protocol might be appropriate for you, or work with you to find a solution that works for you. Most importantly, they look at the whole person and make connections. Symptoms in one area could signal imbalances in another, for example that chronic cold and flu could be related to compromised gut health (where the immune system begins).

How should I prepare for my appointment

You can prepare for your appointment by filling in the health questionnaire, sending any relevant test results before hand and having a clear idea of the symptoms or condition you would like help with, or if you are just wanting help with general health upkeep.

Do I need to have purchased the ImuPro Tests to have a consultation?

No. You are welcome to book a consultation without having done any prior testing and you can discuss what might be appropriate for you.

What can I expect from my consultation?

During an initial consultation you can expect to go over your health concerns and history and identify what you would like to achieve. If you have recent lab results, these will be interpreted and explained clearly. You can expect to have the opportunity to ask questions and have an open discussion about a realistic health protocol to achieve your goals. If there are lab tests that might be appropriate, these can be discussed and ordered. If there are specific supplements prescribed, these can be arranged via a Practitioner Only pharmacy who can deliver them to you. Overall you can expect to be listened to, colleberated with and to have clarity around what to do next and why, to achieve your health goals.
